The International Shipping and Logistics Group of the University of Plymouth’s Business School has a long-standing and proven research track record specifically in maritime economics, international logistics and supply chain management. The research is underpinned by a large and growing portfolio of Master’s courses in International Logistics, International Shipping, and Port Management which provide a research base for these growing disciplines. There is a thriving doctoral programme of over 20 students drawing on candidates from all continents. The International Shipping and Logistics Group is fortunate to be able to draw upon language skills of staff that include fluent Russian, Lithuanian, French, German and Mandarin Chinese.

- ESRC 1+3 studentship
- Overseas Research Scholarships for three doctoral students from Morocco, Korea and Singapore.
- Collaboration with the Technical University of Gdansk and the University of Gdansk, Poland, including studies of Polish liner shipping, port developments and the transition of the maritime sector.
- Research in the Slovak Republic with the University of Zilina.
- Various conference presentations in recent years in the Republic of Mongolia, Greece, USA, Panama, South Africa, Cyprus, the Czech Republic.
- Irish Government sponsored research into port logistical development.
- Collaboration with the University of Klaipeda, Technical University of Vilnius, Lithuania on international logistics in the Baltic States and studies of the freight role of the Trans Siberian Railway.
- Collaboration with the Institute of Shipping and Logistics, University of Bremen; Institute for Transport and Logistics University of Rostock, Germany.
- Permanent advisor to the OECD/ECMT on international transport and logistics issues.
- Participation in the EU Leonardo Programme for the evolution of training responses in re-converting employment areas (Ship-building) with SCHIFF University Kiel Germany and the Development Agency, Gdansk, Poland.
- EU (Phare) Ace - research funding for studies of logistics and shipping in Lithuania and Poland.
- Lloyds of London, British Council and British Academy funded logistics research in Poland, the Former Soviet Union and the Baltic States.

Dalian Maritime University LINK
Dalian Maritime University (DMU) is widely acknowledged to be the best university in China in terms of maritime research and education, and is recognized by the Chinese government as one of the top 100 universities stated in China’s 211 project. Over 13,000 full-time students currently study at DMU. By 2004, over 2,000 international students from over 30 countries have graduated from DMU. Many DMU graduates now work as senior managers in China’s shipping and port industries.
Some of the most important events for the development of DMU include:
- In 1909, the Nanyang Institute in Shanghai established a Shipping Management Section, which is the predecessor of DMU.
- In 1960, DMU was designated to be one of the most important universities in China.
- In 1983, the Asia-Pacific Region Maritime Training Center was established at DMU by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
- In 1985, a branch of the World Maritime University (WMU) was established at DMU.
- In 1998, the University was awarded the ISO9001 Certificate of Quality Assurance accredited by the Norwegian Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and the China Maritime Safety Administration (MSA); it became the first maritime university in China to have the ISO9001 Certificate.
- In 2004, the University successfully passed the quality assessment of undergraduate teaching by the Ministry of Education in China.
- In 2005, the first joint Master’s programme in Maritime Safety and Environmental Management by DMU and WMU was successfully launched at DMU.
Today, DMU has extensive collaboration and cooperation with more than 30 internationally renowned maritime institutions from Russia, the USA, Japan, the United Kingdom, Korea, Australia, Sweden, Egypt and Vietnam, and so on. DMU has also established long-term cooperative relationships with international organizations and institutions: the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU), the Association of the Maritime Education and Training Institutes in Asia Pacific (AMETIAP), the International Maritime Lecturers Association (IMLA), Asia-Pacific Economics Cooperation (APEC), the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the International Shipping Federation (ISF), the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), as well as some world famous shipping companies.
